Developed by the Hampshire-based company Hybrid Drones, the equipment introduces a new category of unmanned aircraft with a transport capacity of up to 400 kilograms.
Designed for vertical takeoff and landing, the HYDRA-400 does not require runways and can be transported on the back of a truck, assembled, and put into operation in just a few minutes. The manufacturer highlights that the system offers a more cost-effective alternative to helicopters in certain military and civilian missions.
Among its main applications is the evacuation of injured people from risk areas, reducing the exposure of human crews. The company’s CEO, Tom O’Connor, says the goal is to remove people from the battlefield without putting other lives at risk, expanding rescue options in complex scenarios.
In addition to transporting personnel, the drone can be configured for logistical missions or to carry different types of cargo, including weaponry. Although no contracts have yet been announced, the project represents an advancement over the smaller drones used recently by combining high payload capacity with ground mobility and operation in expeditionary environments.
